What Certifications Are Required to Operate an EWP in Australia?

Whether you need a formal licence to operate an Elevated Work Platform (EWP) depends on the machine. Getting this right matters - operating without the correct certification is both unsafe and unlawful.

Boom-type EWPs of 11 metres or more

If a boom-type EWP can reach a working height of 11 metres or above, the operator must hold a High Risk Work Licence (WP class). This is a nationally recognised licence issued after accredited training and assessment, and it is administered in Queensland by WorkSafe.

Smaller platforms (under 11 metres)

• Scissor lifts and boom lifts under 11 metres do not require a WP licence
• Operators still need documented training or a verification of competency (VOC)
• Many employers and the EWPA recognise the Yellow Card as evidence of this training
