What Are the Daily Inspection Requirements for EWPs?
A pre-use inspection of an Elevated Work Platform is a legal duty, not a formality. Here is what the rules require, who must do it and how to record it.

Every Elevated Work Platform (EWP) must be inspected before it is used. This is not best practice alone - it is a requirement under the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulation 2011 (Qld), backed by the manufacturer’s manual and Australian Standard AS 2550.10.
Who must carry it out
The inspection must be done by a trained, competent operator. A boom-type EWP with a boom length of 11 metres or more requires a High Risk Work Licence (WP class); other EWPs still require operator training, instruction and demonstrated competency.
When inspections are required
- At the start of every shift, before first use
- Whenever operators change over
- After the unit is relocated to a new area or site
- If a fault or near-miss is reported during the shift
What must be checked
A compliant pre-use check covers the structure and decals, tyres and hoses, fluid and battery levels, the platform and guardrails, all controls and safety devices (emergency stop, tilt and overload alarms), functional movement, and the emergency lowering system.
Recording it
Log every inspection in a daily logbook or digital system. The record is your documented proof of risk management if WorkSafe Queensland ever asks, and it protects both the operator and the employer.
