Safe Operating Techniques for a Forklift

24 June 2024 · EDB Training Services · 1 min read

Safe forklift operation is not about being cautious once in a while - it is about applying the same sound techniques every single time. Here are the fundamentals.

Before you start

  • Complete a pre-operational inspection of brakes, tyres, hydraulics and controls
  • Wear your seatbelt and adjust the seat and mirrors
  • Know the load capacity plate and never exceed it

While operating

  • Keep the load low and the mast tilted back for stability
  • Travel at a safe speed and slow right down for turns
  • Look in the direction of travel and reverse when the load blocks your view
  • Sound the horn at blind spots and keep clear of pedestrians
  • Take ramps straight on, with the load facing uphill

When you finish

Park on level ground, lower the forks fully, apply the park brake, switch off and remove the key. Report any faults so the next operator is not caught out.

These habits are built into every EDB Training Services forklift course through hands-on practice and assessment.
