How to Do a Forklift Inspection in Queensland

Every forklift should be inspected before it is used. In Queensland this is part of an operator’s WHS responsibilities - a quick, methodical check that catches faults before they cause harm.

Pre-start (engine off) checks

• Tyres for wear, damage and correct pressure
• Forks, mast, chains and hydraulic hoses for damage or leaks
• Fluid levels - oil, coolant and, for LPG units, the gas bottle and connections
• Seatbelt, mirrors, data plate and overhead guard

Operational (engine on) checks

• Brakes, steering and horn
• Lights, beacons and reversing alarm
• Smooth raise, lower and tilt of the mast
• Any warning lights or unusual noises

Record and report

Log the inspection and report any defect immediately - a forklift with a safety fault must be tagged out of service until it is repaired. The record protects both you and your employer.
