How to Make Sure Your Forklift Load Is Stable

18 November 2024 · Justine Barber · 1 min read

Most forklift incidents come down to one thing: an unstable load. Understanding how your forklift stays balanced - and how to keep it that way - is the core of safe operation.

Know your load capacity

Every forklift has a load capacity plate showing its maximum weight and dimensions. Crucially, capacity depends on where the weight sits, not just how heavy it is. A forklift rated for 2,000 kg may not handle that weight if the load sits too far from the forks. Never estimate capacity by eye, and remember that attachments reduce the rated figure.

Understand the load centre

The load centre is the distance from the load’s centre of gravity to the face of the forks - usually rated at 600 mm. The further the weight sits from the forks, the greater the tipping risk. Larger or irregular loads can exceed the load centre even when they are within the weight limit.

Secure and position the load

  • Centre the load and distribute weight evenly across both forks
  • Position the load firmly against the backrest
  • Use straps, shrink-wrap or containers to stop the load shifting
  • Inspect pallets and packaging for damage before lifting

Lift and drive safely

  • Insert the forks fully, then raise slowly and smoothly
  • Tilt the mast back slightly and keep the load low while travelling
  • Avoid sudden stops or turns with a raised load
  • On slopes, keep the load facing uphill and never turn on an incline
  • Inspect the surface for potholes, debris and spills before operating

Stable loads are no accident - they are the result of training and good habits. A nationally recognised forklift licence from EDB Training Services covers all of this and more.
