How to Pick Up and Place a Load With a Forklift
Picking up and setting down a load safely is the heart of forklift operation. Here is the correct step-by-step technique.

Reviewed for practical accuracy
Prepared by EDB Training Services, a nationally recognised Registered Training Organisation in Capalaba, Brisbane (RTO 32376).
Handling a load looks simple, but doing it safely and smoothly is a skill. Here is the technique a trained operator follows every time.
Picking up the load
- Approach square-on and stop a short distance from the load
- Level the forks and adjust their width to suit the pallet
- Drive in slowly until the load sits against the fork backrest
- Lift just clear of the surface, then tilt the mast back slightly to settle the load
- Check your path is clear before reversing out
Travelling with the load
Keep the load low - around 10 to 15 cm off the ground - with the mast tilted back. Travel smoothly, watch for pedestrians, and on slopes keep the load facing uphill. For more on why load position matters, see our guide to keeping a forklift load stable.
Placing the load
- Approach the placement point squarely and stop
- Level the forks and raise to the required height
- Move in slowly and position the load over the spot
- Lower gently until the load is fully supported and the forks are free
- Reverse out carefully, then lower the forks for travel
EDB Training Services gives you plenty of supervised practice on load handling as part of its forklift licensing.
