Some of the most serious forklift incidents involve pedestrians, not the operator. Keeping people safe on a busy floor is a core part of safe operation - and a key thing assessors look for.

Separation is the goal

The best control is to keep forklifts and people apart wherever possible - using marked pedestrian walkways, exclusion zones, barriers and clear signage. Where they must share space, everyone needs clear rules.

Operator habits

• Sound the horn at intersections, doorways and blind spots
• Slow right down in shared areas and be ready to stop
• Make eye contact with pedestrians before moving
• Never travel with the load raised - it blocks your view
• Never allow anyone to stand under or near a raised load

Pedestrian responsibilities too

Pedestrians should stay in walkways, never assume the operator has seen them, and keep clear of operating forklifts. Safety on the floor is a shared responsibility.
