Are There Specific Rules for Operating a Forklift Indoors Versus Outdoors?

A forklift licence covers safe operation in any setting, but the hazards you manage indoors are not the same as those in an outdoor yard. A good operator adapts to the environment.

Indoors

• Ventilation - LPG and diesel forklifts produce exhaust, so indoor work often calls for electric units or proper extraction
• Tight spaces, racking and doorways demand slow, precise manoeuvring
• Smooth floors can be slippery when wet; pedestrians are usually close by
• Lighting and blind corners require extra care and horn use

Outdoors

• Uneven ground, gravel and ramps increase the tip-over risk
• Weather - rain, wind and heat affect grip, visibility and the load
• Larger, heavier loads and other moving plant and vehicles
• Greater stopping distances on slopes and loose surfaces

Wherever you operate, the fundamentals do not change: inspect before use, know your load limits, keep the load low, watch for people, and match your speed to the conditions.
