Why employers choose the Certificate III traineeship

The Certificate III in Hospitality builds the skills your venue runs on, in the place they will be used.

  • Trained in your own venue

Training and assessment happen in your venue and around your roster, so there is no gap between what staff learn and the shifts they work.

  • A dedicated EDB trainer

A dedicated trainer visits your workplace and works with each trainee from enrolment to completion, with regular check-ins and feedback on their progress.

  • A nationally recognised qualification

Staff finish with the full Certificate III in Hospitality (SIT30622), delivered by EDB Training Services (RTO 32376).

  • Skills your customers notice

Trainees build skills such as customer service, food safety, responsible service of alcohol (RSA), responsible service of gambling (RSG), and barista and espresso coffee.

  • Workplace shifts in your venue

The qualification includes a minimum of 36 shifts in a real hospitality venue, and your trainee completes them in yours.

  • Less paperwork for you

We organise the Apprentice Connect Australia Provider and the training contract paperwork for you, so you and your trainee just sign.

New hires or existing staff

The Certificate III traineeship works for both. Here is what changes.

New hires

  • Bring someone on as a trainee from their first day, with training planned around the role you need filled.
  • Training and assessment happen in your venue, so they learn your menu, equipment and service style from the start.

Existing staff

  • Upskill people you already employ through a traineeship, with you as their employer.
  • Recognition of prior learning (RPL) means they aren't retrained on skills they already have.
  • Casual staff can be trainees too, as long as they work at least 15 hours a week.

What it costs

Career Start subsidises the Certificate III traineeship and the trainee pays a co-contribution fee. As their employer, you can pay that fee on their behalf. The training provider can't pay it for them.

How it works

Four steps from first conversation to a team member qualified in Hospitality.

  1. Talk to us

Tell us about your venue and the roles you're training for. We'll check which of your staff are likely to be eligible for Career Start.

  2. Sign the training contract

We arrange the Apprentice Connect Australia Provider, who prepares the training contract for you and your trainee to sign and lodges it with DTET for registration.

  3. Plan the training

EDB builds a training plan around your venue, your roster and your trainee's role.

  4. Train and qualify

Training and assessment happen on the job, including a minimum of 36 shifts completed in your venue, and your trainee finishes with the Certificate III in Hospitality.

Who can be a trainee

For the Certificate III traineeship to be funded under Career Start, your trainee needs to meet the Queensland Government criteria. In short:

  • They are employed by you in Queensland under a training contract registered with DTET.
  • They haven't already completed 2 funded apprenticeships or traineeships in the last 10 years.
  • If they are from overseas, they hold a relevant work visa.

Eligibility is set by the Queensland Government and confirmed at enrolment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays the co-contribution fee?

The trainee is responsible for the co-contribution fee, currently $650 for a traineeship or $260 at the concession rate. As their employer, you can pay it on their behalf. The training provider can't pay it for them.

Can I put existing staff through the Certificate III traineeship?

Yes. Existing staff can do the traineeship with you as their employer. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) means they aren't retrained on skills they already have.

Can casual staff be trainees?

Yes. Casual staff can be trainees, as long as they work at least 15 hours a week.

Where does the training happen?

In your venue. Training and assessment are delivered on-site, around your roster, with a dedicated EDB trainer visiting your workplace.

Do the 36 shifts happen at my venue?

Yes. The Certificate III in Hospitality includes a minimum of 36 shifts in a real hospitality venue, and your trainee completes them in yours.

Who handles the traineeship paperwork?

We do. Every Queensland traineeship needs an Apprentice Connect Australia Provider, and we organise that for you. They prepare the training contract for you and your trainee to sign, then lodge it with DTET for registration.

Does payroll tax apply to a trainee's wages?

To assist employers in accommodating a traineeship, Queensland has payroll tax arrangements for apprentice and trainee wages. Whether they apply depends on your business and your trainee, and conditions apply. Check the Queensland Revenue Office website or talk to your accountant.

What if someone isn't eligible for funding?

They can still complete the Certificate III in Hospitality without government funding. The fee without funding is $3,000.
