Year 12 is nearly done, and plenty of families are now working out what to do after Year 12 when uni is not the next step. That is a legitimate path, not a fallback. A Certificate III gives school leavers a nationally recognised qualification and real workplace skills while their friends are still choosing subjects.

This guide is written for parents first. It covers what Year 13 at EDB Training Services is, the two courses on offer, how the training runs, what it costs and the questions parents ask us most.

What is Year 13 at EDB?

Year 13 is EDB’s program for students finishing Year 12 who are not going straight to university. Students choose one of two Certificate III qualifications, funded under the Queensland Government’s Career Start program, and train with us at Capalaba (RTO 32376).

It starts with 5 days of coursework, then continues with ongoing training. It is not a 5-day qualification.

Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations: who is it for?

The Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations (TLI30325) suits school leavers who like practical, hands-on work and getting the details right. It covers how goods move through a warehouse safely and accurately: work health and safety, manual handling, stock control and processing orders.

It leads towards work in warehousing, distribution and logistics, in roles such as storeperson, picker-packer and dispatch. There is more detail on our Supply Chain course for school leavers page.

The forklift option. Once a student turns 18, a forklift licence unit can be swapped in as one of the qualification’s electives: TLILIC0003 Licence to operate a forklift truck or TLILIC0004 Licence to operate an order picking forklift truck. Students who are under 18 can still start the course. The licence unit simply waits until they are old enough. Our forklift licence page explains what the licence involves.

Certificate III in Hospitality: who is it for?

The Certificate III in Hospitality (SIT30622) suits school leavers who like working with people and being on their feet. It covers customer service, food and beverage service, hygiene and working as part of a team. It leads towards work in cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs and hotels.

Barista and RSA are not separate courses here. Units such as SITHFAB025 Prepare and serve espresso coffee and SITHFAB021 Provide responsible service of alcohol can be part of the qualification as electives, so ask us which units your child’s intake includes.

The placement requirement. The core unit SITHIND008 Work effectively in hospitality service requires a minimum of 36 shifts working in a real hospitality venue. That can be paid work or a volunteer placement. It is a real commitment, so it is worth planning for from the start. See our Hospitality course for school leavers page for more.

How does Year 13 work?

Every intake begins with 5 days of coursework at our Capalaba training centre. After that, training continues on an ongoing basis until the qualification is complete. For Hospitality, that includes the 36 shifts in a venue.

These are the intake dates for 2026 school leavers:

Intake starts Supply Chain Operations Hospitality
Monday 23 November 2026 Yes Yes
Monday 7 December 2026 Yes
Monday 14 December 2026 Yes
Monday 4 January 2027 Yes
Monday 11 January 2027 Yes

How much does Year 13 cost?

For eligible school leavers, the student contribution is $70 for the Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations and $75 for the Certificate III in Hospitality. This school leaver price applies to Year 13 only.

The Queensland Government subsidises the rest of the training cost through Career Start. Under the program’s general training pathway, a student generally needs to:

  • be aged 15 or older and no longer at school
  • live permanently in Queensland
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident or hold an eligible visa
  • not have completed a Certificate III or higher in the last 10 years (qualifications done while still at school do not count)
  • not be enrolled in another government-funded qualification

The full rules are on the Queensland Government’s Career Start page, and our government funding guide explains how Career Start works across our courses. We confirm eligibility with every student before they enrol.

Does my child need any experience?

No. Neither qualification has entry requirements, and both are designed to be studied straight after school. What matters more is that your child is interested in the work and ready to turn up for the 5-day start and the training that follows.

What if they are not 18 yet?

Both courses are open to school leavers who are still 17. Career Start’s general pathway starts at age 15 for people who have left school. The one age-dependent part is the forklift licence elective in Supply Chain, which can only be added once the student turns 18.

Do they need a job lined up?

It depends on the course. For Hospitality, the 36 shifts have to happen in a real venue, either paid work or a volunteer placement, so talk to us early about how your child will cover them. For Supply Chain, ask us how workplace experience fits around the training for your child’s intake.

What happens after Year 13?

Students who complete the course receive a nationally recognised Certificate III. From there, the next step is work in the industry they trained for, or further study at a higher level. We can talk your family through the options as training progresses.
