Forklift Licence

What is the Law?

  • Be licensed and competent to operate that particular forklift.
  • Follow safe operating procedures including following the traffic management rules at your workplace.

What Type of Licence Do I Need to Operate a Forklift?

There are two classes of licence needed for forklift related work in Brisbane and Queensland.
Forklift Licence Training Course
Forklift truck – LF (TLILIC0003)

The LF high risk work licence class allows you to use forklift trucks in Brisbane but does not include order-picking forklift trucks (see below).

A forklift truck is a powered industrial truck equipped with a mast and an elevating load carriage which has a pair of fork arms attached (that can be raised 900 mm or more above the ground) or other load holding attachment.

Order-picking forklift truck – LO (TLILIC0004)

To operate an order-picking forklift truck you need an LO high risk work licence.

An order-picking forklift truck has the operator’s control as part of the load carriage/lifting media and lifts with it. Order-picking forklift trucks are generally referred to as “stock pickers”. They can be fitted with a platform extension for use in furniture warehouses, or can be a turret truck in narrow aisle warehouses.

The operation of forklifts within Queensland requires workers to obtain a  High Risk Work Licence  (HRWL) issued by WorkSafe QLD for legal operation. The requirement is mandatory. • The training requires you to pass both theoretical and practical tests that take place during your training period.
  • After completing your training you will obtain a Statement of Attainment alongside your AS1 form.
  • You must submit your licence request through WorkSafe Queensland's online system.
  • Once your licence application gets approved you will obtain a 5-year valid document that works throughout all Australian states.
